Rugs are not carpet, and the good ones should not be cleaned like carpet
A machine-made polypropylene rug can be cleaned on the living room floor. A wool rug with a cotton foundation and a fringe wants to be washed flat, rinsed properly and dried the right way up, or it bleeds, shrinks or smells. We tell the two apart on inspection and quote the job each one needs.
Area rugs come in three families and they want different treatment. Synthetic rugs, the polypropylene, polyester and nylon rugs most people buy for a living room or a kid's room, are tough, colourfast and can be cleaned in place with the same hot-water extraction as carpet, then dried flat. Wool rugs, including most hand-knotted and tufted oriental rugs, are a different material: the dyes can run, the cotton foundation holds water and smells if it dries slowly, and the fringe stains if it is treated like the pile. Those rugs are collected, dusted to shake out the dry soil the pile hides, tested for dye bleed, washed flat with cool water and a wool-safe cleaner, rinsed, extracted and dried flat or hung in moving air, then groomed and returned. Shag, viscose and silk-blend rugs are the delicate end; viscose in particular yellows and stiffens if it is wet-cleaned carelessly, and we will say when a rug is one we would rather not risk.
Pet urine is the most common reason a rug comes to us, and a rug is the one place it can be fully fixed: off the floor, the whole rug can be soaked, treated and rinsed, which cannot be done to a wall-to-wall carpet. We also handle the rug pad and the floor under it, which often holds more of the smell than the rug does, and we point out when a rug's dyes have already been damaged by the urine so there are no surprises.
For most Clarksville homes the practical version is this: the big synthetic rug in the family room gets cleaned in place on the same visit as the carpet, and the one good wool rug, the one from the move overseas or the one somebody's grandmother bought, goes out for a wash and comes back in a week or two. Collection and return are included in the quote across our service area.
What the visit includes
Fibre and construction identified
Synthetic, wool, viscose or blend; machine-made or hand-knotted; the rug tells us how it must be cleaned.
Dye-bleed test
A hidden corner tested before any water touches a wool or oriental rug.
In place or collected
Synthetic rugs cleaned on the floor and dried flat; wool and delicate rugs collected, washed flat and returned.
Dusted before washing
The dry soil a dense pile hides is shaken out first, which is most of a wool rug's dirt.
Pet urine fully flushed
Off the floor, a rug can be soaked, treated and rinsed completely; the pad and floor beneath are treated too.
Fringe and edges
Fringe cleaned on its own, edges and binding checked, the rug groomed before it goes back down.

On the job

Questions about area rug cleaning
Can you clean my rug in the house?
A synthetic rug, yes, on the floor, dried flat. A wool or oriental rug should go out for a flat wash; cleaning it in place risks dye bleed and a foundation that stays damp.
How long does a rug take to come back?
Usually one to two weeks, depending on drying time and the humidity that week.
Will the colours run?
We test a hidden corner first. Some older or cheaply dyed rugs will run no matter what, and we tell you that before washing rather than after.
Can you get the dog smell out of a rug?
Usually, because a rug can be fully soaked and rinsed off the floor. Check the pad and the floor under it too; they often hold more smell than the rug.
Is my rug worth cleaning?
A hand-knotted wool rug, nearly always. A worn synthetic rug that cost less than the cleaning, often not, and we will say so.
Do you repair rugs?
Minor fringe and edge work, yes. Reweaving and restoration of a valuable rug is a specialist's job and we will point you to one.
